Negative Backlash

It probably comes as no surprise that Tom Wilson comes out on top with a whopping 19,020 mentions of which almost half are negative. With his most recent brawl on the ice with Rangers player, Pavel Buchnevich, causing outcry amongst fans, it’s another in a series of violent outbursts that makes him unpopular.

At the other end of the scale we have Connor McDavid who, comparatively speaking, is well loved. Of the 27,890 mentions, only 21.7% of these were negative.

With accusations aimed at players about the ‘zero respect’ fans might have for them or ‘how embarrassed you should be for what you’ve done to this league’ it begs the question…would they say any of this in person? Whilst fans may feel let down by players they might want to remember they’re still human beings, no matter how good (or bad) at their sport they might be.

Methodology:

We used a social listening tool called Falcon to track the last three months of social media to gather this data. The results you’re looking at are the result of quarter of a million social media mentions! Just goes to show, people love to hate.
